It seems the whole idea for the Summerfest in Wisconsin was a direct result of the late Mayor Henry Maier after a visit to Oktoberfest in Munich Germany. Now Wisconsin is not a stranger to both beer and parties, after all Wisconsin is known for its breweries in Milwaukee.

The mayor after some thought decided that this was an opportunity he had to add some revitalization to downtown Milwaukee and this gave birth to the first Summerfest in 1968 which was celebrated in 35 different locations.

In the early 70s all the several locations had merged into one located on the lakefront and Milwaukee on the unlikely location of an old Nike missile site. Reminiscent of Woodstock, structure start to appear, stages were built and more permanent and appealing improvements showed signs of a lasting venue. By the early 1980s well over 600,000 visitors pass through the turnstiles and later that year the number had already increased to over 800,000.

Today Summerfest, known to attendees and locals alike as “The Big Gig”, has become a world event now located on a permanent 75-acre permanent site including vendor in exhibit sites. Recently an additional 22 acres within the site went through a $35 million construction project. More food and beverage buildings restrooms and other buildings have been renovated or built new.

The Summerfest Wisconsin is held over a period of 11 days, with well over 800 acts performing on the 11 modern stages comprising well over 1000 performances for over 900,000 attendees. Performing on stage for Summerfest are the country and the world's hottest music stars and talents drawn to this world-class festival. The music venues are as different as the people that attend. You can listen to pop, R&B, reggae, rock, country and country rock.

This is in fact like a major country fair so gourmet dining isn't something you got to find with the exception of some of the finest burgers in the coldest beer in the world. The official beer of Summerfest is Miller light, because you'll need light beer for all of Friday can eat when not eating ribs, doughnuts, grilled cheese, and everything else you can think of that can be fried.

One of the nice things about Summerfest in Wisconsin is as warm as the days can be the evenings to cool off with a nice breeze that comes in off of Lake Michigan at the Henry Mayor Festival Park. Enjoy hundreds of awesome fireworks over the waters, especially the “Big Bang” display on opening night. This location is spectacular as are some the surrounding areas that you can discover if you arrive a few days early or stay a few days later after the event.

Something that is grown every year is the non-interactive exhibit we can see the latest from the greatest biggest brands. In a shopping's in your blood urine luck at this festival because there are four separate marketplaces where you can shop for hats and T-shirts our work clothing jewelry accessories. And of course like every festival in concert it's a given that you will visit the Summerfest store where you can buy an official Summerfest T-shirt hat sweatshirt or Sippy cup.
